That’s Asda price
kevin | July 27, 2009 | 12:18 pmI was in my local Asda on Saturday when I spotted this sign. On the face of it that looks like a really good deal doesn’t it – after all that is almost a 20% reduction in price, not bad in this day and age and fits well with Asda’s claim to be the price cutting supermarket that’s rolling back the prices.
The problem I have with this sort of stuff is that when Supermarkets are banging on about how they are rolling back prices then my weekly shop should be getting cheaper and quite frankly it isn’t. The average spend in Asda has actually increased by about 20% over the past year and not because we are buying more or buying extravagantly – in fact the opposite is true.
So I did some research: Every now and again I have to do my expenses at work and this involves emptying the contents of my wallet onto the desk and picking out the relevent receipts. The rest of the receipts get swept into my draw and the last time I looked in there it was full to overflowing! So let’s see what we can find….
Ah ha – here’s one from 18th April 2009 and yes food bags are on there – I bought 4 at a cost of 37p each. Ok so it’s true then Asda really have implemented a cut of almost 20% in the price of this product.
But wait what’s this – another receipt form 1st March, just over a month earlier and on this one they are 25p each. So in 6 weeks the cost has rocketed by a huge 56% which makes the 20% roll back in costs seem quite measly
Here’s another one from 29th October 2008, that’s 9 months ago – let me see, oh yes food bags 24p. So somewhere between the end of October and the middle of April the cost of these Smart Price food bags increased by a massive 63%.
So even with the roll back the overall cost increase in less than a year has been a whopping 25% – much higher than the increase in inflation over the period.
So Mr Asda I have a few questions for you
Firstly what on earth happened to justify a 63% increase in costs on this one product alone? The product certainly hasn’t been improved, in fact I have found the opposite that the quality has actually deteriorated during this time with poor perforations which often lead to the bag ripping and having to be thrown away unused.
Secondly why do you insist on insulting the intelligence of your customers by telling them that you have reduced prices when in fact the quoted Rollback price is actually higher than the price was only a few months ago.
And finally if you have increased the price of this product by over 25% and yet claim to have reduced the price – how many more times has this happened over your range? Maybe I’ll get those receipts out again!
