Branford Marsalis Quartet – Barbican, London 11th May 2003

I’m pretty sure that one of the reasons I went to this gig is that I had a CD of Branford playing with the Grateful Dead!

I feel the same way about going to gigs at the Barbican as I do about the Sage in Gateshead. They are huge impersonal places but once you are inside the auditorium they’re ok! I had tickets up on the Balcony – probably bought a cheaper ticket! I still had a good view though.

The thing I remember most was a bit at the end of the first song where he played the same four notes over and over while the drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts did his thing as if he was keeping time with his sax! He also played part of Coltrane’s A Love Supreme which was cool!

The band was:

Branford MArsalis – sax
Jeff “Tain” Watts – drums
Eric Revis – bass
Joey Calderazzo – piaon

The setlist was:

In the Crease
Gloomy Sunday
Vodville
The Ruby and the Pearl
Sixteenth Street Baptist Church
Nocturne
?
E1
A Love Supreme – Resolution
E2
JC is the Man
