We came down by coach from Manchester, where I was at University, and when we got to London there was a tube strike. All tube lines were closed except for the Victoria line so we got from Victoria to Kings Cross and went to visit our cousin who had just had a baby. Then we got the tube back to Euston and caught the overground to Wembley. As soon as we came out of the station the heavens opened and by the time we got to the stadium we were soaked! My girlfriend was wearing white dungarees which became see-through and blue suede shoes which were brand new and were now ruined!
We sat in the stands for the gig which I wasn’t happy about as I would rather have been on the pitch. The picture above would suggest that there was a large TV screen (unusual in those days) but I don’t remember it – I do remember that at several points during the show Jagger and or Richards would climb into a cherry picker which would edge it’s way slowly out into the crowd. It really did work very well and made for painful viewing!
I didn’t really enjoy the Stones that much if I am honest and I remember remarking at the time that as this was their 20th anniversary tour they were clearly past their sell by date! I’ve never bothered to go and see them again! Not that I could afford the prices they charge these days!
After the gig we made our way to Brent Cross to hitch hike back to Manchester. On the way we bumped into an old school friend who used to live round the corner me! The first driver who picked us up let us put our still damp twelve hours later clothes on the dashboard of his truck and he put the heater on to dry them! We got home and went straight to bed and parents arrived to take me home for the summer break later that day!
Support were Black Uhuru and the J Geils band (I seem to recall a power cut interrupted the J Geils Band mid set and they had to go off for a while!

I found a couple of videos on line that look like they were taken from the feed to the big screen. They may be from the following night but I can’t imagine that they were much different to what we witnessed!
I was 17 when i decided to go to London for the summer. Working in an italian restaurant and enjoying life I managed to grab a couple of tickets for the same concert. Unfortunetly both me and my friend went out for a basher the night before and never managed to wake up in time to go to the concert. I still regret it these days.
I was there with my cousin and a mate of ours . We left Nottingham on one of the legendary Way Ahead Bus Tours. It blew my mind when we got to Wembley, thousands of people hanging out for the Stones…. waited patiently for the support bands to do their stuff and out they came…. Jagger racing about the stage, Richards strutting, Ronnie smiling enthusiastically, Charlie solid as a rock….Bill vitualy motionless throughout the entire show!! Fantastic!! All hell broke lose in the crush of folks trying to get outta the place, claustrophobic panic setting in until the release into the car park. Got lost couldnt find the bus….there it was just pulling out of the space, the irate driver becond us on and we head back northwards…. We’d seen the Rolling Stones, I was nineteen…The Gods of Rock had a new disciple!!!
I went with my brother and a couple of friends. I remember we stood about half way back for a while but decided to push our way up front and got near the front into what these days we’d call the mosh pit. We then virtually had no choice but to leap up and down with the rest of the them. We got drenched being so hot and the occasional dousing with beer didn’t help. Amazing fun! I’ve seen the Stones twice since, once at Glastonbury but this was the best. I was 20. The photo brings back memories.
I was there too. Never forget it, wonderful experience. Wish I was 20 again!
We saw them for the first time that night at Wembley, loved it so much we went to see them the following month in Leeds – I was 20 great memories

We travelled down from.scotland by train and got tickets face value for standing terrace opposite end of stage it was crazy lost friends on the day heard support act Black Urhu from outside and I’m sure J Geils band had to go off right at the start as there was no lead vocals PA mic issue ? rained all day Stones were awesome this was my 4th show on the UK leg Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle and then Wembley only time I ever went to wembley wasnt ever there for football etc looking to buy Ticket Stub from Friday show will pay good money as I’ve sadly no longer have any ticket stubs from these Rolling Stones concerts from 1976 and 1982 cheers Kenny kennydice58@gmail.com
I was there too, aged 18. I thought the Rolling Stones were hugely underwhelming. Black Uhuru were superb, though I remember some racist comments during their set by people around us. They were the best band that evening by some distance.
I’m sure I saw John McEnroe there? I was sitting opposite the VIP box about half way up and half way down the pitch. I remember it being a bit rainy until the stone came on. Mick momentarily switch on the monitors to show an England match to see the score. Lol can’t remember now whether it was cricket or football?
It was that time when you could sit or stand almost anywhere; first come, first served. The benefit of that was that the support acts also got a large audience. Unlike today where often people just turn up for the main act because they have assigned seating.
Stones were great…but even better when I saw them about 20 years later at Twickenham.
